RAI Corporation Internship Program

32 Avenue of the Americas 25th Floor New York 10013

>WELCOME!!

First, congratulations on being offered the opportunity to be a member of the RAI Corporation team in New York City.  This is a great honor for students of Media and Journalism, and we want to help you make the most of your time in the United States.  This guide is aimed to answer any questions you may have regarding your upcoming internship and temporary stay in New York.  Please review it carefully and if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

>FINDING ACCOMODATION IN NYC

Finding accommodation in New York City can be a scary prospect and Manhattan is a very expensive borough of New York City, so many interns choose to live in other parts of the city including Harlem, Queens, and Brooklyn or across the river in New Jersey.  The extensive subway system provides easy transportation from one end of the city to the other, so it’s a good idea to look for an apartment near a subway line.  Based on the experience of previous interns, generally interns arrive a few days in advance (3 or 4) and make a reservation at a hostel/hotel in the city for the first week.  During the first week in New York, they have searched for and found an apartment share using the website http://www.craigslist.org/ (the most popular and useful site for anything in New York).   If they were able to arrange accommodation prior to their arrival in New York City, then they simply canceled theirreservation at the hostel/hotel.  For your convenience there is a list of hostels provided.

As with entering into any agreement, we caution all interns to be careful when giving money for security deposits and rent.  If possible, it is advisable to ask the lessor to sign a basic agreement that defines the terms of the arrangement.  However, please note that RAI Corporation does not provide any legal advice and that we suggest you consult with a legal expert for more detailed information.

Many interns choose residence halls, instead of independent apartments.  Residence halls are located throughout the city and provide dormitory-style living, with benefits such as 24-hour security, optional meals, and short- and long-term stays.  Please see the list of residences provided.
